War Journal Entry number 596 update - What If? The Newer Fantastic Four
I keep getting issues of What If? every time Marvel puts out some of these specials, and I've usually been pretty disappointed. There's usually something missing, they don't quite hit the same vein that the old What If? comic series hit.

My reluctance to give up paid off.

What If? The Newer Fantastic Four by Paul Tobin and Patrick Scherberger is an absolute delight. It takes familiar characters and rearranges them in a familiar story, then we get to see it play out. All of these characters were involved in the initial Infinity Gauntlet crossover series, but they didn't get to play the roles they do here. Hulk and Spidey were both a great deal of fun. Iron Man rings a little off-key, but I'm not familiar with what was going on in his title at the time, maybe that has something to do with it. But the real treat is Wolverine, who gets to use skills and tactics he rarely gets a chance to display because he's so rarely in a situation that calls for them.

Hats off to Paul, Patrick, and everyone else involved in it - this issue was, if you'll pardon the obvious pun, fantastic.
