War Journal Entry number 496 - Weekly Haul 06/11/08
MARVEL
Captain Britain and MI:13 #2 – Secret Invasion. Still the best it of the Secret Invasion and I’m crediting that wholeheartedly to Paul Cornell. Nice art by Leonard Kirk, too.
ClanDestine #5 of 5 – It’s Alan Davis, so it’s wonderful. I don’t think the series is especially open to readers that didn’t read the first series, but it could still be enjoyed. And should be. The first series is collected in a nice hardcover, read it and then read this.
Eternals #1 – Continuing a tale after Neil Gaiman is a daunting task, but so far Charles and Daniel Knauf seem to be doing a good job of it. Daniel Acuna’s art works much better in the world of the Eternals then it did in Green Lantern.
GeNext #2 – Yeah, no. I gave it a shot, but I just don’t care. The characters aren’t making it worth $3.99 a month, especially when all that extra buck is getting me is extra back-ups that I already have.
Hulk: Raging Thunder – It’s written by Jeff Parker, so I didn’t doubt it would be good. Thundra battles Hulk… for personal reasons. Nice tale overall and I really enjoyed the art of Mitch Breitweiser. The reprint of FF#133 featuring Thundra’s fight with the Thing was a nice addition.
Last Defenders #4 of 6 – Hopefully Joe Casey has enough room to pull all of this together in the next two issues, because I really, really want to love this series.
Secret Invasion: Who Do You Trust? – Five little tales across the Earth (and beyond). The Captain Marvel one by Brian Reed and Lee Weeks was an unnecessary epilogue to his miniseries, but the rest are solid pieces that work well to highlight other events going on in the war. Mike Carey and Timothy Green III give Agent Brand (of Astonishing X-Men) more history and depth while positioning her for later in Secret Invasion. Christos Gage and Mike Perkins have a humorous and poignant tale with Wonder Man & Beast. Marvel Boy gets some screen time courtesy of Zeb Wells and Steve Kurth while the Agents of Atlas make a welcome return thanks to Jeff Parker and Leonard Kirk.
Skaar, Son of Hulk #1 – Greg Pak takes Ron Garney with him on this trip back to the planet Sakaar to show that Hulk and Caiera’s child didn’t die, but has had to become more savage than his father ever was.
Sky-Doll #2 of 3 – Excellent. Pure excellence, in fact, with how disturbing it is at points.
X-Force: Ain’t No Dog – Charlie Huston uses artist Jefte Palo, who seamlessly combines the early style of Jae Lee with Frank Miller, to perfect effect in the first story. The art on Cyclops needed to be dialed back a little, but the fights were fantastic. The second story is by Jason Aaron and Werther Dell’edera and focuses on James Proudstar. It’s a decent character piece, but little more.
DC
Booster Gold #10 – I’m still loving this series, and will continue to as long as it doesn’t end up crossing over into current comics. Keep it in the past and future and I’ll be thrilled.
Green Lantern Corps #25 – Brilliant.
IDW
Angel: After the Fall #8 – Nah, I’m dropping this one, too. I just don’t really care about the Angel cast of characters other than Spike, but without James Marsters it’s just not the same.
